F.W. has submitted the above cards for interpretation. The first three cards are the “heart” of the reading and are read as a unit. Then, the fourth card is drawn and read as a summary or clarifier. Since two out of the first three bear the number four (13=1+3=4), it is safe to say that this reading focuses on the basis or foundation of the issue at hand and addresses what F.W. needs in order to feel safe and grounded.
The spotlight has been on the knight of swords, the current expression of F.W.’s perception of her/his mission. It is as if this knight has been told there is a dragon threatening the castle, so (s)he has thrown on her/his armor, grabbed her/his sword, jumped on the horse, and ridden off in seventeen directions at once in an effort to locate the threat and eliminate it. The message of the card is to stop scattering your energies, F.W.. This effort is excessive and will soon wear you out. Defending the castle cannot be your responsibility alone, and it would be far better to withdraw temporarily, assess the threat (if any), and plan some strategy to defeat it.
The spotlight is now on Death, letting go of the old form that has served its purpose. This is not a card of physical death and annihilation; it is a card of moving on instead of trying to employ a form that has outlived its usefulness. A wise friend once said, “Letting go is easy; it’s trying to hold on that hurts.” It is important to see that it is the FORM that needs to be replaced by the new energy, indicated by the rising sun on the right side if the card. This is a new day, and it calls for finding a new way to handle challenges.
The spotlight is moving toward the four of wands, a reassurance that you have the skills and talents to protect you as you set out in a new direction. Your abilities are strong enough, good enough, and alive enough to provide you shelter and cause for celebration. This is a solid foundation upon which you can build.
The summary card is the page of swords, the testing card. This card appears once you have chosen a path and set a goal you wish to accomplish. It acknowledges the small voice of inner doubt that tempts you to quit and go back to “the old way,” whatever that may have been. The cards it summarizes have already told you that you cannot go back, and there is no good reason to do so. Please know that the situation you are experiencing is merely a test. If you wish to be who you say you want to be and do what you say you want to do, this is just something you have to accept and get through. You can do it, F.W.; good luck.
